What is the difference between a bypass humidifier and a steam humidifier?
A bypass humidifier uses your furnace fan to push air over a water-soaked evaporator pad, adding moisture as air circulates through your ducts. It is the most common type, lower in cost, and works well in most homes. A steam humidifier generates its own steam independently of the furnace cycle, giving you more precise humidity control and better performance in tighter, more insulated homes. How much does a whole-home humidifier installation cost?
The cost depends on the humidifier type (bypass vs. steam), the complexity of your installation, access to your ductwork, and whether any electrical or water line work is needed. We provide clear, upfront pricing after our in-home assessment before any work begins, so there are no surprises.
Do I need a whole-home humidifier, or will a portable unit work?
A portable humidifier can help in one room, but it needs frequent refilling and cleaning, and it does not humidify the whole house. A whole-home humidifier is connected to your furnace and water line. It keeps the humidity even in every room, every time the system runs. During the in-home assessment, we help you see which option fits your home and your needs.
My humidifier is running but the air still feels dry. What could be wrong?
This is usually caused by a clogged or calcified evaporator pad that needs replacing, a faulty solenoid valve not allowing water through, a bypass damper set incorrectly, or a humidistat not calibrated properly. In some cases, the unit is simply undersized for the home. We diagnose the actual cause before recommending any repair so you are not paying for parts that are not the real problem.
How often does the humidifier water panel need to be replaced?
For bypass humidifiers, the evaporator pad should typically be replaced once per heating season usually in the fall before winter starts. Depending on your water hardness, it may need replacing mid-season as well. Hard water in the Montreal area can cause faster mineral buildup. Can Electrika install a whole-home humidifier on any type of furnace?
Bypass humidifiers work with most forced-air furnaces with a standard duct system. Steam humidifiers are more flexible and can work with heat pumps, hydronic systems with air handlers, or situations where a bypass configuration is not ideal.
