If you are renovating, have you considered rewiring your home as part of your project? The wiring in many of Montreal’s older homes is insufficient to meet today’s high demand for electrical power. In fact, unless you have recently updated your home’s wiring, it is likely that your current electrical network is operating at or above capacity, which poses dangers of fire and/or electrical shock.

Are your wall sockets two prong? Are circuit breakers tripping often? When you turn on a lot of electronics in a room, does the lighting flicker or dim? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, call Electrika for a home appraisal to see if you need rewiring services.

What if my Home Does Need Rewiring?

Be aware that a whole house rewiring is a major project that can take up to three weeks to complete, depending on the size and layout of your home. However, by rewiring your home, you are investing in the value of your home, as wiring in the present day is stringently regulated and is a potential selling point for your home should you decide to move. It is also a highly recommended safety upgrade if your home is older than 20 years, and especially if your home has knob and tube style wiring, mostly in houses built before 1950.

As well, while rewiring may take weeks and cost thousands of dollars, unsafe wiring can destroy your home through fire in moments.

Types of older wiring:

Knob and Tube

Knob and tube wiring was the standard from the late 1890s to just after the Second World War. It consists of porcelain knobs, used to hold the wire in place, and tubes, used to bring the wiring through wooden joists. It has two wires: a hot and a neutral and no ground wire. Knob and tube wiring is now considered obsolete and is mostly found in homes of 50 plus years.

Concerns with Knob and Tube Wiring

  1. No ground return wire, leading to a higher possibility of electrical shock.
  2. Any deterioration of wiring insulation poses a fire hazard
  3. Insurance companies may not insure your home, or may charge a higher premium for homes with knob and tube wiring.
  4. Knob and tube was designed to have any excess heat dissipated by air, not be packed into modern wall insulation.
  5. Knob and tube is highly susceptible to mechanical/physical damage

Advice for Homeowners with knob and tube wiring

  • Have you wiring evaluated by one of our licensed electrician to determine if the system was installed or modified within Quebec’s building codes.
  • Keep your appliance load as low as possible on each circuit.
  • Any brittle or damaged wiring needs to be replaced as soon as possible due to fire and shock hazard
  • If knob and tube wiring leads to your kitchen, washroom, laundry room, or any exterior plug, it must be replaced. This is due to these areas needing a ground return socket (three prongs) for safety.

Simply put: if you aren't 100% satisfied with your Electrika experience, please call us and we will work to resolve your concerns. If we are unable to do so, we will refund the service amount.

This extends beyond the repair and into the service experience as well. If our Electricians smoke or swear in your home, we will refund your service; if our electricians fail to respect your space or clean up once they have completed the repair, we will refund your service.

If a repair fails within the first year, we will refund your service.

We guarantee that your electrical panel and main service replacement project will be completed on or before the date we have promised. We guarantee our workmanship for a period of ten years. If your panel or service gives you any trouble at any time during that period, we will repair the problem free of charge. We guarantee that the equipment and/or fixtures we supply and install in your home will perform as we have stated. If any equipment or fixture fails during normal use in the first three years we will either repair or replace the item at no charge to you. Light bulbs are not covered by the above warranty. Warranty for electronic equipment such as GFCIs, dimmers, and electronic thermostats, is for one year only unless a primary surge protection is installed. With the installation of a surge protector, a three-year warranty is in place.
